Shangri La
July 15th, 2007
I discovered two very cool things today after conversing via email with Maryam of Marrakesh fame about an upcoming project: 1-There is a beautiful type of embroidered panel, called a Suzani, that has it’s roots in Persia and the Middle East (Suzan is the Persian word for needle). 2-There is a historical home in Honolulu (no less!) that was conceived as a veritable shrine to Islamic art by Doris Duke after her “World Tour” honeymoon back in the 1930’s took her through the Middle East. The house is called Shangri La and-I wanna go there! I think you will too…

There are many gorgeous collections featured throughout the house, including her Suzanis, but the photos of the painted wood ceilings are what put me over the top! Be sure to check the whole website as it is full of great information and beautiful images, including a virtual tour.

Duke is so fascinating. Some of my early posts in 2006 were about her suzani collection and Shangri La
